That is an Ariel Atom body, but it seems to have an electric motor. Everyone has to realize that acceleration is quickened not only by horsepower, but also by reduced weight. The Atom originally comes with a modified Honda Civic engine, boasting 300bhp, and the car weighs a little over 1,000 lbs. This electric engine seems to have added weight to the car to make it 1,500 lbs. Few cars weigh less than 2,500 lbs. because of all the glass and things we have to protect it. So the torque to weight ratio is different. If that electric motor was placed in the Ferrari chassis and body, with most of the same features, the gas powered Ferrari would most likely win the race. If the electric engine added 500 lbs. to the Atom, it would add at least 300 lbs. to the Ferrari body and chassis. I really don't think that was a fair test of engine strength, simply because other factors (weight and aerodynamics) were not controlled properly. Two cars with the same body style and weight, with only the engine being different, would have been a real experiment. Plus, there's no way in hell I'm going grocery shopping in any of those cars. I'll stick to the Prius, as slow as it is.

Actual the video puts itself out there to be a serious comparison among these cars. Hopefully you are joking cpezza, because you are doing anyone with your stance a disservice by stating your point so unintelligently and ignorantly. The fact of the matter is, the original Ariel Atom is just as fast, although it runs on gas, and is ONE THIRD of the price. That's right, around $50,000 instead of $150,000. It's also unfair to imply that that guy made that car, since he merely swapped the engine out for one of his own creation. Like beatusmongous said, it's not a fair test of engine strength. It's merely an example of power/weight ratios.

but I think you are missing the point. This is an demonstration that electric cars can be high performance - not an excercise in power to weight ratios... Second you are wrong about it being just as fast as an Ariel Atom - this demonstrates a couple of specific advantages that electric motors bring to a performance car - immediate, flat and high torque curve per HP and no transmission - an Arial would need a much larger HP motor than the 300 HP quoted below to be remotely competitive... Finally, I think you give short shrift to the engineering necessary to put an electric motor in a car - I somehow doubt you would poo-poo Warren Moslers MT-900 just because he drops an GM LT-1 powerplant in his chassis... As for your point about power to weight ratios - maybe you should do a little research before spouting off - the Carrerra weighs exactly twice the X-1 - but has 602 HP v. 247 HP for the Wrightspeed... so which has a higher power to weight ratio?
